We understand that cigarette smoking causes serious diseases and is addictive. We agree with public health authorities that the best way to reduce the health effects of cigarette smoking is to quit or not to start in the first place. We also recognize that quitting can be difficult and many cigarette smokers who try to quit do not succeed.
If an adult consumer smokes, we hope they choose one of our brands. However, if a smoker decides to quit, we want to help them be more successful. In doing so, we accept that our actions may lead to further declines in cigarette consumption.
Formed in 2003, Philip Morris USA’s Cessation Support department works to help adult smokers who have decided to quit be more successful. The department provides a free resource called
QuitAssist®, designed to connect smokers who have decided to quit to information about quitting smoking from public health authorities. The department also supports scientific innovation by providing grants to contribute to the development of improved smoking cessation methods.
The cessation support program is divided into three focus areas:
- Consumer Connection helps connect smokers who have decided to quit to public health information on current effective quitting methods.
- Cessation Science Innovation contributes to the development of more effective quitting methods in the future.
- Stakeholder Engagement helps us understand perspectives on how PM USA can support smokers who have decided to quit.
