Philip Morris USA Denies Requests for Product Placement
RICHMOND, VA (February 25, 2005) - With the Oscars just days away, some have taken the opportunity to suggest that the presence of smoking in movies today is the result of direct or indirect product placement by tobacco companies. Philip Morris USA does not pay for product placement of our brands.
Fifteen years ago, Philip Morris USA adopted a policy of not paying for product placement. This policy was reinforced in 1998 by the Master Settlement Agreement, which strictly prohibits participating manufacturers such as Philip Morris USA from paying for product placement in movies, television shows, music videos or video games.
Philip Morris USA does receive requests from the entertainment industry to use its products and brand images in movies, television programming, theater performances and other productions every year. We deny such requests.
