For Smokers Who Want to Quit, A Nationwide Program---QuitAssist™
RICHMOND, VA (June 23, 2005) - According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more people are former smokers than current smokers and 46 million adults have quit smoking.[1]    To help current smokers who have decided to quit be more successful, Philip Morris USA is offering a free information resource - QuitAssist™ - nationwide.

As part of this effort, Philip Morris USA is airing two television advertisements nationally to highlight the availability of the resource guide which is designed to connect smokers who have decided to quit to tips and tools from public health authorities including the U.S. Public Health Service and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).

“Taking steps to help smokers who have decided to quit is one of the ways we are working to reduce the harm associated with our products,” said Howard A. Willard, Philip Morris USA executive vice president, corporate responsibility. “As a manufacturer of a product that is addictive and causes serious diseases, like cancer and heart disease, we believe we have a role to play in communicating to smokers about the serious health effects of our products and resources that can help smokers quit.”

The CDC study also found that among those U.S. adults who said that they were everyday smokers in 2003, 41.1 percent (15.1 million) reported they had stopped smoking for at least one day during the preceding twelve months because they were trying to quit.[1]

The free QuitAssist™ resource guide is available online or by calling 1-888-784-7848. The television ads highlighting the availability of this resource will air for four weeks from June 6 until July 3 and are available for viewing online.
